In The Loop
Who it is

In The Loop is Matt Dickey - a NYC based guitarist, arranger and engineer. Occasionally the project is also a real-time collaboration between Matt and another musician (Tracey Kroll on drums, Zahra Hashemian on vocals, Gray DeVio on violin, or Gregg Jarvis on drums), where they improvise by 'looping off of one another'. In either sense, the process is best described as 'live production', where all elements of the music and the mix are both improvised dynamically, in real time.

About Matt

As an undergrad at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Matt studied with Dave Stoltz (of the Dickey Betts Band) and Bob Carabillo. Currently, he is a Music Technology Graduate student at New York University.

His musical influences are many, ranging from James Brown, Herbie Hancock and The Grateful Dead to many other jazz artists and classical composers such as Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Tito Puente, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, and many others. More recently, DJ Shadow, DJ Cam, and Portishead have stuck out as inspiring musical forces.

His musical projects have included his own former band The Truth, sideman status with various NYC projects such as Loud Apartment, Dr. Bellows, Avatar, Ekayani, and frequenting as a guest with The Thang out of Hartford. He often plays guitar with R&B/Soul singer RC Holmes, and he has toured briefly with Big Sam's Funky Nation.

Over the past few years Matt has been developing his audio skills and adding more electronics, effects, and tecnology as a creative approach. While working on his master's, he has been focusing on multimedia and interactive programming, with an aim at developing real-time re-mixing audiovisual techniques. This unique combination of musical prowess and technological innovation has enabled him to create full scale, real-time, improvised audiovisual creations. In the near future, this creative process will include input from other sources: the audience and its surrounding environment, dancers, visual artists, and even the web!
